Linux's Security Capabilities

1.1 What is Linux ?

• Linux is Unix

• The kernel is the core of the system

• It can be compared to a big program, loaded in the memory at boot time. It's main tasks are:
  • to manage the input/output devices and the processes and memory allocation

  • to share the cpu time and the memory between the processes

• Programs can "reach" the kernel's functions via system calls
