1.1 What is Linux ?
Linux is Unix
The kernel is the core of the system
It can be compared to a big program, loaded in the memory at boot time. It's main tasks are:
to manage the input/output devices and the processes and memory allocation
to share the cpu time and the memory between the processes
Programs can "reach" the kernel's functions via system calls
