Protocol designed with IPv6. It allows to encrypt traffic in the network layer

IETF standard since 1995 (first version)

Includes a key management protocol (IKE: Internet Key Exchange since 1998)

IPsec advantage: allows encryption in the network layer, which can be used by all applications
